Google Books - is the biggest online library on the Web. It allows to search, preview and read online millions of books from libraries and publishers worldwide. But reading books on Google Books (online) is hardly comfortable. You can't even add bookmarks. Besides, Google Books doesn't allow to save books and read them offline on your tablet or e-reader like Kindle, Nook or Kobo. You can’t print Google Books and read them in bed, but need to sit in front of desktop screen that harms your eyes. Besides, if you use a ebook management program, where you use to organize all your ebook library, you want to download Google Books to your hard drive. But, ok, there are 3 ways to download Google Books to your desktop:
1. Use the Google’s PDF/EPUB download feature that is available for some out-of-copyright books
2. Download books manually from the Internet Explorer cache
3. Use one of the Google Books downloader programs
1. Use the Google’s PDF download feature for out-of-copyright books
For some out-of-copyright books Google Books provides PDF or EPUB download option, that allows you to save (and therefore print and read offline) these books. To find books you can download, click on the 'Full view books' radio button before entering your search terms in the search box. Clicking on the 'Download' button on the book page will allow you to download a PDF of the book to your computer. Unfortunately, not all books that are fully viewable are downloadable as PDF files. The overall number of books with the full preview there is much larger. So you might be lucky if the book you need is available for download.2. Download books manually from Internet Explorer cache
The book pages that you can view on Google Books are actually PNG images on HTML page. So, it is possible to save any visible book page as an image to your computer. You can 'save page as' in any browser and find the PNG image in the saved 'files' folder. But you need to scroll the book and repeat this 'save page as' operation for each page.
To make this process a little easier, you can use the following hack:
1. Open folder “C/Documents and Settings/%USER%/Local Settings/Temporary Internet Files” on your computer and delete all of the content of the folder
2. Open the needed book on Google Books in Internet Explorer and scroll it down to the end (or use the page browser).
3. Open “Temporary Internet Files” folder. Copy all PNG files. These files are the pages of the scanned book
4. Now you can print the PNG files and compile them into single book using a PDF compiler software
3. Use one of Google Books downloaders
There are some tools that automate the routine operations described in the previous paragraph. But unfortunately, most of them don’t work properly – they either download only few book pages, or hang your computer, or cause ban of your Google Account. The most popular tool that was called Google Books Downloader was recently terminated by its creator. You can also add a book to your local library and after that the program will automatically save the last page you read.

Please note that Gooreader is useful, but not magic program. It can't open and download these pages that are not available on Google Books in the books with limited preview. The program costs just $19.95, but it's not a big deal if you really need to download Google Books.
Is it legal to download Google Books?
All these books, that you can read or preview at Google Books, are collected from libraries all over the world, scanned and converted to text using OCR by Google employees. Of course, all this content is out of copyright or with copyright given by owner/author. For books that may be protected by copyright, only 'snippets' are shown. Nevertheless before making any specific use of downloaded books, you need to confirm the legality of your own actions. The rules regarding public domain materials differ from country to country, and sometimes the specific use is not allowed. That is why a book's inclusion in Google Books doesn’t mean it can be downloaded anywhere in the world. For example, Google recommends not to engage in large scale redistribution or rehosting of the book files, sell digital or physical book copies, or help other people buy and sell them. But you can convert Google Books to PDF for personal reading needs.

Amazon to Mac
Download Amazon Kindle for Mac to read ebooks from Amazon. You can now download books from the Kindle app or sync books you've previously bought on Amazon to your Mac.
Barnes & Noble to Mac
You can read Nook books in the web browser of your Mac with Nook for Web.
Google Play to Mac
You can read Google Play books directly in your web browser.
If you plan on reading books from Google Play on your Mac when you're offline, you'll need to download Adobe Digital Editions. Follow the prompts to authorize your computer and sign in. (If you don't have an Adobe ID, you can create one for free.) You can then download the EPUB file from Google Play and read it on Adobe Digital Editions any time, even if you are not online.
Smashwords to Mac
As always, Smashwords allows you to download several different files to read on your Mac.
- You can download Adobe Digital Editions to read the EPUB file of your desired ebook from Smashwords.
- You can also get the MOBI file from Smashwords and read it using Amazon Kindle for Mac, which was mentioned previously. For this to work, you'll need to drag the file to the Kindle folder that Amazon Kindle created when you installed it.
- Finally, you can also download a PDF or RTF file from Smashwords to read on your Mac.
Kobo to Mac
Download and install Kobo Desktop for Mac. Sign in, and your Kobo books, bookmarks, and notes will be synced between all your devices.

Part 1. Read Google books online on Mac
Read Google books on mac with web browser
This is the universal known way to read Google books on mac. Do not want to download any apps on your computer? This way is what you want. Below is the detailed steps.
1Log in your Google account and go to My Books-->eBooks, and you will find all your purchased eBooks there.
2Just click the book cover, the book will be open with your web browser. Mine is Chrome.
According the above picture, you can see the table of content, font changing, search bar, help button and bookmark button. So if you are not planning to read Google books offline on mac, these features will satisfy your basic needs.
Part 2. Read Google books offline on Mac
If you are not satisfied with the online web reader, you can also read Google books offline on Mac. Here I will introduce two different ways to read Google books offline. You can practice the one you like best after knowing how it works. To read Google books offline on Mac, we have to download google play books to Mac at first.
Google Books Downloader For Windows
Go to My Books-->>Ebooks, you will see all your purchased Google Play Books in your library. Find the book you want to download and click the three dots under the book cover and you will see that there some options as below picture.
Here you will encounter two possible scenarios at this process.
Scenario 1: When you click on 'Download EPUB' or 'Download PDF' , you will download the google books as epub file or PDF file directly.
How To Download Google Books On Mac Computer
In this situation, you can just open these epub or pdf file with your Adobe Digital Editions for reading.
Scenario 2: When you click on 'Download EPUB' or 'Download PDF' , you will get the acsm file instead of EPUB or PDF file.
But what is ACSM file? Generally speaking, ACSM file is not a real ebook but you can consider it as the link for you to download the real Google books. But you need to do more steps before downloading the real google play books which is authorizing your computer with your Adobe ID. If you do not have one, just create one at the official Adobe website. If you still have not installed the Adobe Digital Editions, please download it here.
Authorize Adobe ID as below instruction.
Run Adobe Digital Editions. At your Menu bar, click 'Help'-->>'Authorize Computer'. The authorize window will pop up. Just fill in your Adobe ID and passwords, and then click on 'Authorize' button to finish the authorization.
When you have successfully authorized your computer with Adobe ID, just drag and drop the .ACSM file to the main interface of Adobe Digital Editions. The google books will be downloaded automatically.
When the google book has been downloaded to your computer completely, it will open automatically at the Adobe Digital Editions as below picture.
Also, you can find this downloaded books at your computer at the folder at its default path: /user/user name/Documents/Digital Editions. In below picture, you can see that this book is not with the extension .acsm, but .pdf which means this book has been downloaded successfully.

Read Google books on mac with Adobe Digital Editions
Since Google Play does not develop its own reader apps, it allows you to download your google play books(.acsm file) on mac via Adobe Digital Editions. What's more, when Google books has been downloaded successfully with ADE, it will automatically open in ADE. That's why ADE is the first tool I want to share here for reading Google books on mac. It can open and read Adobe adept DRM protected eBooks, like Google play books.
Read Google books in iBooks or any other third party reader app
As the Mac user, I bet you must be very familiar with the iBooks, the built-in eBook reader on Mac computer. It is an amazing thing to read your books on mac in iBooks, right? It is universal known that Google books are protected by Adobe's DRM while the iBooks app can only open epub or pdf ebooks without DRM protection or purchased from iBooks store. To read Google books in iBooks, we have to remove DRM from Google play books.
